What is 4-Aco-DMT?

Also known as synthetic shrooms, 4-Aco-DMT is a substance which converts to a substance similar to psilocin inside the body after ingestion, creating a similar experience to a shroom trip. It is known for producing a less mentally intense, but highly visual experience relative to other psychedelics like LSD and psilocybin.

The tendency of 4-Aco-DMT to create a more clear-headed experience for recreational use should not be overstated. Some users experience strong mental effects, and for a large portion of users it will become intense if doses are high enough (which is true for essentially all psychedelics).

What are the benefits of 4-Aco-DMT?

There are many different ways people can respond to a drug, but generally the positive effects of 4-Aco-DMT include open and closed eye visuals. Other physical effects might include music enhancement, auditory hallucinations, and minimal body load but a generally pleasurable body high. It is also possible to have increased energy.

For mental effects, you can expect an easy-going headspace, mood improvement, euphoria, increased humor and laughter, and minimal anxiety. You might also experience feelings of appreciation and connection. If you are using 4-Aco-DMT with friends, you might notice increased feelings of sociability. It can also feel life-affirming such that people are happy to be alive and happy to be having the experience.

What are the negative effects of 4-Aco-DMT?

There are also negative effects of 4-Aco-DMT. For example, you might experience GI distress such as stomach ache, nausea, and indigestion. Sometimes there are temperature effects, with users experiencing cold sensations or sweating and overheating. Negative effects on your mental state include possible anxiety, confusion, and paranoia. Along with these, it is possible to experience thought loops (and if you’ve ever experienced anxiety, you know how closely related those two symptoms can be!). However, it is more common to have a fairly clear-headed mental state.

How can you address negative experiences on 4-Aco-DMT?

There can often be anxiety centered around experiencing a change in your mental state. This change might include sensing reduced control over how you feel and what you perceive. The changes in perception can leave people questioning their choice to have taken a drug and it can be a trigger for people to fight to maintain control. Fighting the trip is often counterproductive and further contributes to the negative effects.

It may cause transient periods of anxiety and confusion, but they are usually more easily addressed by basic calming techniques and rational thinking than if you were experiencing a high dose of LSD, psilocin, or DMT. You can more easily distract yourself with a change of scenery, music, or by speaking with a friend.

Can 4-Aco-DMT be used therapeutically like shrooms?

The same property of 4-Aco-DMT that causes a relatively clear-headed and lower level of thought alteration may reduce the therapeutic benefit. Insights and mental changes may be less interesting, especially for someone familiar with the introspective aspects of stronger psychedelics.

In a sense, 4-Aco-DMT is more grounded and more easily navigable because the mental state is closer to normal consciousness. It doesn’t necessarily give the classically deep spiritual and cosmic ideas common to other psychedelics.

How is it different from other psychedelics like LSD and shrooms?

Many people feel a profound sense of connection while using stronger psychedelics, but this effect is generally not seen at lower doses of 4-Aco-DMT. Ego dissolution, another classic part of psychedelic experiences, is not likely to be experienced while using this drug. Psychedelics in general have an elating effect but it is frequently covered up and distorted by anxiety and confusion so the lower rate of these downsides with 4-Aco-DMT helps with mood elevation. It won’t definitely produce a joyous experience, but it appears to do so more often than other psychedelics.

Even though it is a fairly clear-headed drug, you should still expect it to be more difficult to do a lot of normal tasks. Something as simple as answering the phone can be extremely taxing when you are unexpectedly confronted with it. This type of experience has a good chance of provoking some anxiety and hesitation. You should definitely not just fool yourself into thinking that you can handle everything just because you feel relatively normal.

Are set and setting important when using 4-Aco-DMT?

A lot of users do fine in calm settings, but can spiral into negative or difficult experiences if they try to do too much. An example of this would be interacting with strangers in public. This is partly because trying to hide that you’re on a drug can be very unpleasant and at the end of the day, clear-headed or not, psychedelics are significantly reality altering. You should absolutely not attempt any activity like driving.

Is it okay to do 4-Aco-DMT for my first time doing psychedelics?

Some people consider 4-Aco-DMT to be a good introductory psychedelic because it gives people a way to understand what a somewhat trippy mindset is like while carrying comparatively little psychological risk. This drug also allows for a gentle introduction to psychedelic visual distortions.

Because there is still a chance of anxiety and paranoia it is good to have a trusted sober person with you since they can help alleviate irrational thoughts. It is important to remember though, that most people report limited or even no anxiety or panic. Normally 4-Aco-DMT causes mood improvement, with the positive effects seen early in the experience.
